Between Sport and Nature: The Altopiano del Sole Becomes the Italian Capital of Mountain Running
From September 6 to 18, 2025, the Altopiano del Sole will become the beating heart of mountain running, hosting the Italian Mountain Classic Championship and the training camp of the Italian National Mountain Running Team.
Twelve days of competitions, training sessions, public events, and activities for all ages will bring established champions, young talents, and enthusiasts from all over Italy to the trails of Monte Altissimo and the Valle di Lozio.
Two Phases of the Event
On Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 September, Borno will host the Italian Mountain Classic Championship and the Baby Run, offering both a national competition, valid for the FIDAL championship, and a fun mini-race designed for children.
From September 8 to 18, the National Team will then be hosted by the municipality of Lozio, where they will prepare for upcoming international competitions. Two public events will also be organized, allowing fans to meet and interact directly with the athletes.
The Italian Mountain Classic Championship Races
Saturday, September 6 – Baby Run: “First Steps… to Become Champions”
At 3:00 PM, at Barissimo in Borno, the race weekend kicks off with the Baby Run, a playful and non-competitive event for children aged 3 to 14, with a short, safe course repeated multiple times depending on age.
An afternoon of fun and community, with gifts and snacks for all participants.
Sunday, September 7 – Borno Monte Altissimo Mountain Classic
Borno will host the first edition of the race valid for the Italian FIDAL Championship, organized thanks to the collaboration between ASD P3RSONAL, Pro Loco di Borno, the Municipality of Borno, and Borno Ski Area.
The course, designed together with the FIDAL Commission, is a technical and scenic 7.3 km loop with 425 m of positive elevation gain, in an up-and-down style, winding through the panoramic trails of Monte Altissimo.
Race logistics will be based at the Borno Ski Area, with a rich race kit, a final pasta party, and a cable car service for spectators to reach the most scenic viewpoints.
“Hosting this event in Borno is truly the icing on the cake — where the cake is a major project to extend tourism beyond the winter season, a project that also includes sport,” said Matteo Rivadossi, Mayor of Borno.“These races, both for athletes and for children, are not only a source of pride for our area but also a way to showcase the significant work and investments being made together with neighboring municipalities to make our mountains enjoyable all year round. From skiing — the foundation of Borno’s tourism — to mountain biking, to mountain running, which we have embraced more recently: I truly believe that Borno and the Altopiano del Sole are the perfect natural gym. Thanks to our climate, altitude, and many other factors, we offer the ideal environment for athletes, enthusiasts, and anyone who loves outdoor sports. My thanks go to everyone who has worked and continues to work to achieve these goals — bringing this event to Borno shows we are on the right path. ”
Echoing this sentiment, Andrea Miorotti, Councillor for Sports, Waste Management, Public Green Areas, and Civil Protection of Borno, added:
“We welcome this event with great enthusiasm. Sporting events are becoming an increasingly powerful driver for promoting the area, inspiring our youth, and creating opportunities that deserve to be maximized. For years, we have embraced this vision, and now, thanks to the synergy between organizations, institutions, and sponsors, we have the honor of hosting the Italian Mountain Running Championships and the pre-World Championship training camp — an unforgettable emotion.”
“Being the organizing body for the Italian Up & Down Mountain Running Championship is a great source of pride.
This recognition gives value to our commitment and dedication. It means raising the bar for event organization, taking care of every detail so that athletes find a top-level competition, carefully planned in every aspect. Hosting athletes from all over Italy allows us to engage with other realities and pushes us to maintain the highest level of professionalism.
Thanks to the Comunità Montana of Valle Camonica, the Municipality of Borno, and Borno Ski Area — from the very beginning, we found great synergy to prepare every detail in the best way possible. I believe everything is in place to make September 6 and 7 in Borno feel like a true celebration of sport.” concludes Matteo Giorgi, President of ASD P3RSONAL.
The National Mountain Running Team Training Camp
From September 8 to 18, the Italian National Mountain Running Team will be in Valle di Lozio for the “Lozio Trail Running Camp”: ten days of training sessions and opportunities to meet fans and enthusiasts in the lead-up to major international competitions.
“It is with great enthusiasm that the Municipality of Lozio welcomes the Italian National Mountain Running Team for its official training camp. For our community, hosting the Azzurri is a unique opportunity to showcase Valle di Lozio and the Altopiano del Sole on a national level, as ideal locations for mountain sports.
This initiative perfectly reflects our vision of Alpine development based on respect for the environment, the promotion of local culture, slow and sustainable tourism, and enjoying the mountains through one’s own efforts — a vision that, in 2024, earned us the prestigious international Bergsteigerdörfer – Villages of Mountaineers recognition.
Thanks to the organizers, collaborators, and promoters. Our trails, our villages, and our hospitality will be ready to welcome anyone wishing to share this experience and discover training routes suitable for national and local athletes, as well as for passionate mountain runners. These will be ten days of sport, emotions, and community,” said Natale Gemmi, Mayor of Lozio.
Tuesday, September 9 – “Face to Face with the National Team”
At 8:00 PM, the Altopiano del Sole will host a special evening at the Casa della Sapienza Auditorium, where institutions, athletes, and coaches will meet the public to talk about mountain running and share the emotions of recent competitions. It’s a unique opportunity to meet the champions, learn about the team’s strategies, and hear their thoughts on the territory that is hosting them. A refreshment will follow to close the evening in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
Tuesday, September 16 – “Running with the Azzurri” Test Run in Valle di Lozio
A unique day where mountain running enthusiasts can join the national team for a test run of the “Hurtìe – Water Trail”, a 9 km loop winding through woods and meadows, connecting the four historic villages of Valle di Lozio.
With 400 m of positive elevation gain, the route celebrates the harmony between nature and local history, offering spectacular views and the chance to share a passion for the sport alongside top athletes.
The run will start at 6:00 PM and last approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, followed by a communal dinner at 8:00 PM at Casa della Sapienza in the Sommaprada hamlet — a convivial evening to share the flavors of the Altopiano del Sole with the national team athletes.
“The bond between Valle Camonica and the Italian national mountain running team runs deep, built over years through diverse organizational efforts and landscapes. The Italian Championship in Borno and the pre-World Championship training camp in Lozio further strengthen this connection. Thanks to the administrators, organizers, and all those in the area who continue to nurture the dreams of our national team,” said Paolo Germanetto, FIDAL National Mountain Running Coach.
The Voice of the Territory
Once again, the event confirms how sport serves as a powerful engine for promoting Valle Camonica and the Altopiano del Sole.
Priscilla Ziliani, Councillor for Sport, Culture, and Tourism of the Mountain Community of Valle Camonica, said:
“The Mountain Community is proud to host this edition of the Italian Mountain Running Championships.
This event confirms that our territory is excellent and at the forefront in the sports sector. Just last July, the Altopiano del Sole hosted the Italian Marathon Championships, and Darfo Boario Terme hosted the Italian Cycling Championships, to name only a few.
I am convinced that sport is a primary asset for valley tourism: it can help showcase the beauty of our territory while also driving local economic growth.
As Councillor for Sport, I am proud to have organizations here that are committed every day to hosting and organizing sports events of this level.“
The main sponsor, Valle Camonica Servizi Vendite, added: “We stand alongside mountain running with the same energy that drives our work — the energy we deliver every day to homes and businesses. Events like this are a precious opportunity to enhance the territory where we operate and to strengthen our bond with the community. That’s why we choose to be here, with all our energy.”
The Borno Monte Altissimo – Italian Mountain Classic Championship and the Lozio Trail Running Camp are a unique opportunity to experience sport in close contact with nature, discover the scenic and cultural heritage of Valle Camonica, and share the passion for mountain running with Italy’s greatest athletes in the discipline.
