IN SEPTEMBER, THE ALTOPIANO DEL SOLE BECOMES ITALY’S CAPITAL OF MOUNTAIN RUNNING
From September 6 to 18, the area will host the Italian Mountain Classic Championship (September 7) and the training camp of the Italian Mountain Running National Team.
Twelve days of races, training sessions, public meet-and-greets, and activities for all ages will bring renowned athletes, promising young talents, and enthusiasts from all over Italy to the trails of Mount Altissimo and the Lozio Valley.
The program will kick off in Borno with the Baby Run on Saturday, September 6 — a mini race designed for the little ones — followed on Sunday, September 7 by the Italian Mountain Classic Championship, a national race valid for the FIDAL championship.
From September 8 to 18, the national team will stay in the municipality of Lozio to prepare for upcoming international events. Two public events for mountain running enthusiasts are planned during the camp:
1) Tuesday, September 9 at 8:00 PM – Casa della Sapienza Auditorium
“Face to Face with the National Team”: Institutions, athletes, and coaches will meet with the public to share stories about mountain running and the excitement of recent races.
2) Tuesday, September 16 from 6:00 PM – “Running with the Azzurri“
A course preview where mountain running enthusiasts can join the national team to test the “Hurtìe – The Water Trail,” a 9 km loop connecting the four historic villages of the Lozio Valley through woods and meadows. The day will end with a group dinner at the Casa della Sapienza in Sommaprada.
SEPTEMBER IS ALL ABOUT SPORTS
On September 13, the spotlight turns to the Vallecamonica Vertical, an exciting nighttime climb in Malegno organized by Atletica Cima.
From the village, athletes will climb to the top of Mount Guna along a 4 km route with a 750 m elevation gain. The nighttime atmosphere makes the experience even more magical, with the breathtaking view of Valle Camonica under the stars rewarding the effort.
Also on September 13, at 6:00 PM outside the Malegno gym (race village), the BABY VERTICAL will take place for children and teens (ages 0-17), on an obstacle course designed with age-appropriate difficulty levels.
On Sunday, September 7, the Sports Festival returns to the Piamborno Sports Field, offering a fun day of sports activities for children, teens, and adults.
The GEL of Lozio invites you on Saturday, September 13 for a climbing day at the Nerina cliff, followed by moments of celebration and entertainment.
In Angolo Terme, the 7-a-side football tournament in memory of Alex Bertoli will be held on Saturday, September 13, and on Sunday, September 14, the Poker Challenge will close the Poker della Montagna race circuit, with the final event reserved for the top-ranked athletes in the previous four rounds.
A new addition this September is the Sports Festival on September 20 and 21 in Piazza San Damiano in Ossimo Inferiore. The theme, “SPORT FOR EVERYONE”, highlights the wide range of activities available in the area. It’s a great opportunity to discover the sports, recreational, and social opportunities available year-round on the Altopiano. More details and the full program will soon be available on the event’s dedicated page.
TRADITIONS: THE TRANSUMANCE FESTIVAL
The event that best symbolizes the shift from summer to autumn on the Altopiano del Sole is the Transhumance Festival, scheduled in Borno from September 26 to 28.
This celebration honors the ancient ritual of bringing livestock down from the alpine pastures after the summer season, marking the herds’ return to the villages and the end of work in the highlands. Today, this ritual has become a collective celebration that blends tradition with fun, turning the animals’ descent into a moment of gathering, sharing, and rediscovery of the Altopiano’s roots.
During the weekend, you can meet the animals up close at the fair area in Dassa, explore stands with local products and crafts, watch themed demonstrations and shows, join the “tractor parade,” and taste local food. Partner restaurants will also offer special menus for those who want to fully savor the traditional flavors.
