Lozio Mountaineers’ Village: the Altopiano del Sole meets Lungiarü

Since last December, Lozio has been a member of the prestigious club of Mountaineers’ Villages (Bergsteigerdörfer): a network of exemplary locations in the field of sustainable alpine tourism, comprising several centres in Austria, Germany, Italy, Slovenia and Switzerland.

This project was created with the objective of promoting a mountain tourism based on the principles of respect and sustainability, aiming to enhance the territory through low environmental impact interventions.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A MOUNTAINEERING VILLAGE

What does this recognition entail?

To answer the question, Natale Gemmi (coordinator of the Mountaineers’ Village project in Lozio) and Giorgio Buzzi (president of the Altopiano del Sole) met Giorgio Costabiei, mayor of San Martino in Badia and of the hamlet of Lungiarü, the first Mountaineers’ Village in the Dolomites.

From the discussion with the first citizen of South Tyrol, it emerged that the ‘Mountaineers’ Village’ represents a true seal of quality, recognised by a public that numbers some 2.5 million members and that prefers a slow form of tourism, including outdoor activities and places where one can rediscover the pleasure of being in contact with nature.

The common goal of the Bergsteigerdörfer is clear: to create an authentic experience that leaves a positive impact on visitors and the environment.

The Mountaineers’ Village is more than a tourist destination, it is a commitment to sustainability, involving local authorities, the community and tourists to preserve and promote the local ecosystem.

To clarify what it means to be a Mountaineers’ Village, Natale Gemmi uses a very effective metaphor:

“It is like going to a restaurant with a Michelin star: as a user, you already know what level of cuisine and welcome to expect, because the star in itself represents a guarantee. In the same way, the title of Mountaineers’ Village identifies an area with specific characteristics, and those who visit it already know that in this location they will find neither large shopping centres nor fashion chains, but local craft shops, trattorias with zero-kilometre products and routes suitable for slow walks where you can be in harmony with nature.”

FUTURE PROSPECTS

The certification obtained in December 2023 gives Lozio the title of the first Mountaineers’ Village in Lombardy. The official inauguration event will take place in mid-May, with the signing of the Alpine Convention in the presence of the mayor and the president of the Austrian CAI.

For Lozio and for the entire Altopiano del Sole, this recognition represents an opportunity and an important stimulus to intercept and stimulate a new tourism, which increasingly focuses on the privileged relationship with nature and the possibility of living an authentic experience with the territory.
